By Edward Alexander
We purchased this bicycle for our grandson for Christmas. Most of the assembly went smoothly, even though the instructions are quite inadequate; they need to be edited and clarified. Our main problem was the front fork and tire assembly. The tire in no way would mount on the bicycle. The metal tubing of the fork is either manufactured wrong, or the axle and tire are configured wrong. Either way, we could NOT get the tire to mount onto the bike. That being said, I just got off the phone with an Amazon rep. who was amazing! He arranged for a replacement bike to be sent out (at no charge) and it will be here before Christmas. =) He did mention that if this replacement bike has the same problem, then a recall might need to be issued. Will update this review after we have new bike assembled and critiqued. In the meantime,....Merry Christmas! Peace on Earth! Goodwill to all men!Update: 01/02/2013 - We received the replacement bike and it assembled with no problem whatsoever. We packaged up the first bicycle, affixed the return label and dropped it off at our local UPS store. We're very satisfied with Amazon's help and customer service.

After spending more time than I care to admit searching for a quality bike for our four year old son, I finally ordered a Schwinn Scorch. I literally went to every bike shop in the area, searching, after being disappointed with what I saw. Some had a metal chain guard (which was a plus), but lacked a hand brake (wanted him becoming familiar with a hand brake in addition to a coaster brake). I found it really tough to find the bike I was looking for in a 16 inch frame, regardless of price. His previous bike was a Kinderbike 12 inch balance bike. Great bike, but it was getting too small. Also, it was time for him to try a pedal bike. Purchased this bike because of value, quality, and features.Pros:o Excellent value $$$o This bike is solid solid solid / high quality (except for pedals)o Assembly was straightforward (didn’t experience the fork problem as some other reviewers did)o Has rear AND front hand brakes in addition to a coaster brake (I did not come across any other model that offered this in a 16 inch bike).o Even comes with a pair of front axle foot pegs (not that my 4 year old would ever use them, but they make good bumpers when he lays his bike down)Cons:o This bike is heavy. Currently using without training wheels. It may be difficult for a 4 year old to handle at first (but confident my son will handle better as he gets older).o Pedals are very cheap, very difficult to turn. I ended up ordering a replacement pair Avenir Resin Pedals from Amazon and they make a world of difference. Well worth spending an extra $8.19. With the new pedals, this bike seems much easier for my son to pedal and ride.o The box was taped up where it had ripped when it arrived -- seemed to have had a rough life. The rear reflector and one wheel reflector were broken when it arrived in the box -- called customer service at Pacific Cycle in Illinois – Schwinn is a sub-brand of Pacific Cycle – just needed to provide model number and date code printed on bike -- they were very pleasant on the phone and mailed the parts.o Has a plastic chain guard. Plastic is cheaper and lighter, but I’ve read that the plastic breaks, especially when used by young riders -- but from my experience with customer service, I’m confident a replacement is possible if it breaks on this model.Would have given 5 stars if the pedals weren’t so cheap. But the other qualities of the bike merit 4 stars.

I bought this bike through Amazon for my son's 4th birthday. The bike came shipped in the manufacturer's standard bike box with your usual assembly required; front wheel, seat, pedals, and handlebars. Some mechanical ability is required for assembly, but no more than any other boxed bike you would buy. The design is nice and overall design quality high. There was one quality issue that made the bike unusable - the front fork was welded too narrow to fit the front tire. For that, I would have normally given the bike a rating of 2; however, I contacted customer service and within that same day they shipped out a whole new fork at their expense. It arrived within a week and is the correct size. Yes, the quality issue was an inconvenience, but their customer service more than made up for it and knowing if I have any other issues they are there to help is well worth a 5 rating!
