Cool bike which fell apart the first week

We got this bike for my 8 year old son, who finally learned to ride a 2-wheeler, and had outgrown his 16 inch bike.ASSEMBLYAssembly requires METRIC tools: a set of metric hex keys for sure, and I recommend a metric rachet set instead of an adjustable wrench. You will also need a phillips head screw driver and pliers. If you don't own these, order some metric hex keys when you order the bike. The bike comes partially assembled. You have to put on the handlebars, the seat, the pedals, and the front wheel, and adjust the brakes. The instruction book is a "generic" instruction book for many Mongoose models, and none of the pictures of the handlebar set in the book resembled those of this bike. Customer service was more than helpful: you have to loosen the 4 hex nuts on the front of the handlebar set, and flip the stem over before re-tightening the hex nuts. The hex nuts face front, by the way -- it wasn't immediately clear to me. The rest of the assembly was straightforward, but brake adjustment was difficult for the front brakes. I moved the rear seat reflector to lower the seat to the absolute bottom. Assembly took about an hour, and this is the first bike I've had to assemble. I didn't install the wheel pegs.THE BIKESpecs are as listed on the product page. The finish is a nice-looking matte red. The bike is a little big for my son, who is 48 inches tall. The brake handles are a little far from the handlebars and difficult to reach with his 8 year old hands. Nevertheless, he was pretty happy with the bike, until he fell a few days after we got the bike. Upon this fall, the rear brakes fell apart, and the pieces that fell off skidded into a sewer grate, along with the front handlebar reflector. Since then, with no working brakes, he can no longer ride the bike. It should be noted that the brakes come pre-installed; this isn't one of those things that I had to do as part of the assembly, and I hadn't had to adjust the rear brakes.CUSTOMER SERVICEThe customer service line was terrific. They took my information and are sending replacement parts. I'll update this review when the parts arrive.OTHER THOUGHTSIf your kid is on the smaller end of the height range for a 20 inch bike, this might not be the right bike for your kid. Even at the lowest seat setting, my son's toes barely reach the ground, and his hands are too small to grip the brakes effectively -- which, I'm sure, contributed to a bad fall. Nonetheless, I would expect the bike to hold up to an occasional fall, and was disappointed that it did not.
