Made in China. Enough said.

I had high hopes for this bicycle for our son. It was a good price and, from my memory as a child, Mongoose made really good bicycles. Well, that may have been true in the 1980s but a lot has changed since then.My first clue was the "Made In China" imprint on the cardboard box. My second clue was the instruction manual. It was filled with "If your bicycle looks like this, then do this" types of statements. Of course, my particular model didn't look like the ones pictured in the instructions, but I managed just fine. If you are not technically minded, please have someone do the installation or buy it pre-assembled.The final straw, however, was when I stood the bike up to view the finished product. I pushed on the pedals and it locked up. It seems that the chain guard's mounting bracket was bent, causing the pedals to hit it and jam. I tried bending the cheap metal brackets back into place to no avail. It seems that the thin plastic making up the chain guard was, itself, also bent or warped. That's what happens when you try to make stuff cheap--you get cheap crap in return.My options are to either return it or leave it without the chain guard. To avoid my son getting his shoelaces caught in the chain, this piece of junk is going back.Though it won't help, I'll write a letter to the manufacturer (Pacific Bicycles) asking them to please bring their manufacturing back to the United States. It's obvious that their cost-cutting ventures into Chinese manufacturing results in a shoddy product. I doubt they'll listen, but who knows.Save your money. Skip Mongoose. The name doesn't mean what it used to.
