Very Disappointed

We paid extra for the Kettler name because we wanted to avoid poorly made, potentially dangerous merchandise from big box stores. We had previously purchased a Kettler tricycle for our child and were very pleased with the German made quality. Knowing that more and more manufacturers are moving production to China, I investigated this pretty thoroughly. I did not attempt to contact Kettler and I wish I had.When I received the bike and assembled it, the first thing I noticed was the atrocious quality of the welds. Any first year trade school student could do better. The welds are pitted and jagged. If any quality control procedure at all had been in place, this bike would have been rejected. This prompted me to look closely at the box where I found the "Made in China" label.Please understand that I have nothing against the people of China. They are certainly capable of producing high quality goods. The sole reason any Western corporation moves production overseas is to produce those goods cheaply. The retail price stays the same or increases, and the company makes more profit for the investors.What angers me is that the country of origin was not clearly identified. Kettler is trading on their previously well earned reputation for quality and substituting slipshod garbage like the Candy model. We paid twice as much for a bike with the Kettler name. I guess there is no other alternative, but if that's the case we'll just go buy the junk at big box mart like everyone else.

Not up to Kettler quality

Bought it based on experience with Kettler trike. This item is nowhere near that quality. Look elsewhere.

Don't pay attention to the bike snobs

I purchased this for my little girl two years ago. It has provided solid and frequent use since then. Yes, it is made in China, but, yes, it also costs the same as other big box models. So the moral there is: at this price point Chinese is what you're going to get. If you want the uber-crafted Germanoexperience that your snooty bikesnobbery requires then you're going to have to drop some coin, otherwise quit complaining. The welds are not atrocious - they are not ragged and they have held up just fine. The paint job is attractive and has proved similarly rugged - though this bike lives in a garage when not in use. I have no idea how a permanent home out of doors would treat it. One big plus is that the bike is substantially lighter than equivalent 16 inch bikes out there - which for a small child is no small advantage. My only quibble is that the vinyl covers on the pads cracked and fell apart pretty quickly.
