By Munttha Suundhais
Parents/ Grandparents/ Loving Friends and Relatives of Young Riders... please study the promotional photos and product literature closely before purchasing the Kawasaki Mono... it might be better described as a second tricycle than a first bicycle-- mostly because it is very small (the purported 12" tires are really on 8" rims)... but also because it seems to have been proportioned for toddlers: children with shorter legs and longer torsos... the seat and handlebars are only slightly adjustable, which means that the bike will either fit your child out-of-the-box or it probably won't ever... there is only one caliper brake, the front one: the one that will flip your child over the handlebars if they apply it before the coaster brake... to stop safely, your child must learn to operate the coaster brake, so the front caliper brake becomes superfluous... the distance between the peak of the pedal travel and the middle of the seat in its uppermost position is shorter than the same measurement on two tricycles that my kids have now; so, it looks like their knees almost hit their chins when they ride this 'bicycle'... meanwhile, the distance between the middle of the seat and the grips of the handlebars is 2-3" longer than the same measurement on their tricycles; so, they have to lean forward to steer while at the same time their legs look scrunched... the assembly manual covers many different models of cycles-- except this one...! if your child is in-between 'tricycle' and 'bicycle,' then either get a Schwinn Roadster tricycle or a Huffy 16" bicycle instead of the Kawasaki Mono...

Our son loved this bike that we got for his third birthday. I should've heeded warnings about assembly, though. My husband did the best he could and attemted a few times over a few nights b4 the party to install the hand breaks, without success. The directions are not clear and some small pices continually came loose that neither of us were sure should be part of the mechanics. We'll now have to get it to the local bike shop to have that section properly installed.

The package arrived on time with a slightly damaged box. When opened, a couple of scratches on the frame and a damaged "Ringer." NO TOOLS INCLUDED FOR ASSEMBLY!!!! The bike comes mostly assembled, but the Operator's Manual has very very very limited and vague assembly instructions. It seems, the instructions are for almost all of this company's bicycle products since it covers bike parts and brakes that are not even remotely like the ones on this one. Unfortunately, the 12 inch wheels look much smaller now than they seemed in the picture. Luckily for us, our little boy is short and even shorter legs for his size. Anyway, most of the assembly is straightforward, except there's no "Finished Product" pictures to assist in arranging the parts' orientations. For example, when screwing in the handlebars, you're also aligning the front "Fork" that holds the Wheels. Unfortunately, backwards or forwards... you don't know until you hop back online to look at what it's SUPPOSED to look like! Lastly, After 1.5 hours of slowly working on the bike, I gave up installing the front brakes for the day.All in all, assembly is difficult at best. Product seems to be solid for what was paid for. Not recommended for those without a bit of time and skill with mechanical devices.
