Buddy Bike Family 8 Speed

Product Description

Buddy Bike Family BB102-AL-8 is designed to encourage novices and non-riders to cycle. This bike model includes an aluminum frame in metallic burgundy, bi-pod kickstand for stability and a 8-speed Shimano Nexus internal hub for easy maintenance and pedal-free shifting. It varies from prior bike models with lower top tubes for easier bike mounting and a lower rear rider seat. Adult riders under 5'7" may be more comfortable with this bike model. For taller riders, rear-rider leg room can be increased by purchasing the SP600-30.4 seat post which sets back the seat an additional 1.25 inches. For child riders, fold-out foot pegs offer a place to rest their feet out of the pedal path. Set back seat post (Search SKU RO-XS13-I1JI) and fold-out foot pegs (Search SKU PP-5YDM-LUT6) sold separately.

i own this bike and love it!

Hi,I own this bike and love it. It has been a great way for my 11 year old, autistic son and I to spend some personal time together riding (he can't ride on his own).We've had the bike 3 years now. The main reason I like this bike, as compared to any other option, is my son rides in front of me and is safe.I would highly recommend contacting the company to arrange a trial ride from an owner of the bike. Not horrible, but it could use some help.

First off, I am pretty handy. I am an electrical engineering student working his way through school turning wrenches.Opened the box, all appeared to be in order, I started assembling the bike.It went together ok, but the chain guard was broken, the rear wheel bearing was too tight, I had to take it apart and re-adjust the bearing clearance. And the crank arm bearing was too loose.the crank arm sprocket was also eccentric, this caused the chain tension to vary as the pedals turned. the chain must be tightened with this in mind or bearings could be damaged.I like the fact that the bike has hand and pedal brakes. and my son loves it.

Horrible Instructions

I should have known there was going to be trouble when a washer fell of the factory sealed box as I carried it into the house.As for the instructions, lets put it this way, Avigo makes one set of instructions for every bike they make from little boys/girls bikes to big mountain bikes. Therefore, they aren't even close to specific for the bike you purchase. There is no parts list, no required hardware, etc. It is all very generic. After a few tries, I tossed the instructions to the side and used common sense. This worked until I got to the handlebars. There is a single picture just showing handlebars and the instructions read like this, "loosen the bolt using the 6mm Allen key". Um, what bolt and what Allen key? So, I dig around and find a big bolt tossed in the bottom of the box. I'm not sure how I would loosen it though since it isn't bolted into anything. I go ahead and put it in the handlebars, but it is just dangling loose in the neck of the bike. I get my flashlight and look down into the neck and there is absolutely nothing to screw it into. I start wondering if I'm missing a part, then I remember there is no parts list so I can't even determine if something is missing. So, I move on hoping to have a moment of brilliance when I come back to it.On to the seat. "Loosen the nut on the seat clamp and add 3 or 4 drops of oil to the threads of the bolt." Well, what is the seat clamp? Is that the clamp on the seat or the clamp on the bike that holds the seat on? Oil? I don't have oil. Was it supposed to come with oil? Who knows? No parts list. So, I use common sense and get the seat on. It isn't oiled though. I hope that isn't a problem later, but I don't have oil.When the whole thing is together other than the handlebar, I decide to call the company. Oops, it is Saturday and they are only open from 7-4 on weekdays. Hope you don't have a job or that you can take your bike to work with you and take time to deal with them and their lack of parts and instructions. Seeing as I have a 4 year old little boy napping who can't wait to ride his bike when he gets up, I Google. The Avigo website is useless. I can download "an" owners manual. That is right, there is one. This is how I know they only make one for all their bikes. Aside from this, there is no information that is helpful at all.Finally, I called Toys R Us and talked to someone there. At first I was told to call the manufacturer on Monday and order a part. When I explained my little boy would be heartbroken and begged, he finally agreed to take the part (the wedge - I figured this out on Google no thanks to Avigo) from another bike there. I will be driving back to the store once my son wakes up and I hope for the best, but this has been a nightmare and, lets face it, putting a bike together isn't rocket science. I hope I'm not missing other critical parts I don't know about and I'm still wondering what I was supposed to do with the washer that fell out in my kitchen floor because I never came up short a washer.The only reason I gave this bike 3 stars was because once it is put together, it seems to be a pretty good little bike. I hope so at least!
