Look like a chopper, rides like a dream!

If you think this bike looks cool, just wait until you ride it! I have actually been up and personal with over 10 balance bike and the Early Rider is one of the best we've experienced. Not only does it look cool, the super fat tires make cruising look effortless. With a small push, my son takes off and I quickly have to start running to catch up with him. I admit I was skeptical about a wood bike, but honestly it's appears to be built like a tank. We've only had it for a month, but already love it. One word of caution however, be prepared to answer a lot of questions when you are out with this bike. Countless people have stopped us to ask us about the bike!!

Looks great and enjoyed by 2-3 year old

We bought this for our now three year old son last Spring and we have been very happy with the purchase. He started using it right away. Of course he was not very good at first but it was not too challenging to discourage or not challenging enough where he got bored. First six months or so had to spend a lot of time pushing him - killer on the back. Thankfully now he his able to propel and coast on his own. The wood on the bike definitely gets nicked up and the foam at the end of the handle bars are deteriorating. But it is expected given how rough it is used. Gives it character:).

Lots of features, but pricey and needed many adjustments

My daughter is petite; so, we got her this pricey 5-speed bike with 20-inch wheels for xmas 2008. Item arrived well-packaged but with a few friction marks. I had to install the front wheel, seat, pedals, water bottle cage, and handlebar. I broke them down to these steps.1. Front wheel looked straight but the wheel did not spin freely. I had to regrease and repack the wheel bearings.2. Handlebars installed easily. The cables and shifters are pre-installed; I just had to loosen the adjusting bolt and the handlebar slipped into place.3. Pedals screwed in easily.4. Seat had to be adjusted to correct angle. The bolts are hard to get to, but hopefully, you only need to do this once.5. Water cage is flimsy and I hate where it goes 'cause the water bottle gets dirt and grime really fast.6. Brakes. The V-brakes are strong but I had to adjust the front brakes. I've always found cantilever and V-brakes a clumsy burdensome ordeal. These were no exception. If you don't have the patience to do it right, take the bike to a bike mechanic and get them set right the first time.7. The travel on the brake levers was too much for my daughter's small hands. On her maiden voyage I saw her struggle to grasp the levers to come to a stop. Turning the adjustment screws all the way in was still not enough. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me longer adjustment screws. That did the trick. So, you may want to keep an eye on your brake levers. Lever to outside of handlebar should be no more than three inches. My mtn bike and hybrid bikes are 3.5. This bike was originally set at about 3.75 - way too large a gap for a 10 year old.Now that the bike is finely tuned, it rides great. My daughter loves it and it rides well and stops on a dime. The bike is heavy, but the extra gearing will compensate for that. Again, I only got this bike because my daughter is petite and quickly out grew a single-speed 20-inch bike, but she is not big enough to jump on a 24-inch bike. This will tie her over for a couple more years.I ride and work on my own bikes; I have a tandem, hybrid, mountain and even a lowrider bike. I have the tools and knowledge to make all the necessary adjustments to make this bike road worthy. I feel this bike should have been put together better at the factory than in the condition I received it - I should not have had to touch the bearings and brakes. Most buyers should consider taking this bike to a qualified bike mechanic.

Nice bike. Daughter loves it.

We found the other review written by [..] very helpful.Our daughter is also petit for a 10 year old and there are not many 20" bikes with gears to choose from.The next size bike 24" is way too large for her.My husband was able to put it together without any problems.(There wasn't much to do - put on petals, handlebar, slip on gears)As in the other review, the brake lever is much too far away from thehandbar than it should be. It is farther away than my adult bike.We will probably see about getting the longer screws and see if we canclose this gap.The chain rattles in the lowest gears (1 and 2).Daughter loves it.

wouldn't buy again

My daughter loves this bike. It was her first "mountain bike". The price was good and we like the look of it and we were happy not to get a brand that was too common. But we've had some issues with the brake cables. And she's had to learn to put the chain on herself, because she'll be riding and the bike will just come to a stop. She has to walk it to a safe place and then fix the chain. She's pretty independent for 9years old, but otherwise - I wouldn't recommend it.

Poor design for wheels and training wheels

I bought this bike for my 3 year old son. Assembly was relatively quick and easy. But I do have two complaints about the design, for which I am going to return this bike:1. The plastic spokes on the wheels are designed in a way that it is extremely difficult to get a pump nozzle to the valve on the tire. There is just not enough space near the valve to get a pump nozzle in. I have tried with a bike pump, a football pump with a flexible hose, and a car tire pump also with a flexible hose. You need to try really hard to push the valve through the tire, and try to maneuver the nozzle in, but I was unable to. Had the designers angled the valve outwards instead of straight up, this problem could be rectified.2. The included trainer wheels fit on easily, but on one side, it sits angled to the back. There is an aluminum bracket between the training wheel arm and the bike frame that is supposed to keep the training wheel in the right position, but there seems to be too much give in the slot the aluminum bracket locks into. The training wheel on the other side seems to fit OK.NASCAR Hammer Down Bike (12-Inch Wheels)

Very very complicated and stupid design. Not able to fill air inside tire. Also the tire rim is plastic and not looks good. Quality is very very poor. going to return this product.

Good way to start

I got this for my soon to be 2 year old son. He likes watching his big brother ride his bike, but hasn't been able to join in. The packaging was confusing. It came in a humongous box with another box inside with which held the bike. Seemed like a big waste to me.As for the bike itself, my 2 year old really likes it. He kinda scoots around on it as best he can. We're only using it indoors right now since we don't have a helmet and I just don't trust the balance of this outside on concrete. He has fallen over a few times, but I'm not sure if that has been him or the bike. Most likely him. The wheels are pretty wide and seem stable.I do appreciate that I didn't have to try to put this together. It came assembled. The little horn on it is kinda ridiculous. It just kinda squeaks at you. It's lightweight enough that my 2 year old can carry it around, but sturdy enough that the 5 year old can push him from behind and it stays (mostly) upright.After almost a week with it, he's doing good. It took a few times of showing him how to get on it. At first he wanted to climb on from the back. He's got it down now. Now we're working on how to steer. It took a few times for him to understand how to walk his feet to get moving, but this is a trainer bike after all and I guess that means it's doing what it's supposed to do.UPDATE: He's flying up and down the hall on it now. I don't think it's going to be hard at all to transition to a regular bike. I'm not sure he's going to want to! He rides this daily. He's steering well and going in circles and just having a great time. I absolutely love this and am increasing my stars on it.UPDATE: One month later and he's still riding it daily...

It is the best balance bike for toddler ~ 2yrs old

Why you want to get a balance bike?With a balance bike, kids can learns to balance on their own right from the start. Unlike a normal pedal bicycle fitted with training wheels, the riders learns balance first, pedal last.
